Below you will find some
candle burning tips that most candle makers make sure their customers
understand.
- Your first burn time on your candle
is important. You need to (or at least try) burn your candle long
enough to get the wax pool out to about 1/4" from the edge of the candle.
To do this, burn your candle for an hour per inch in diameter that it is.
so if you have a 2" candle, burn it for two hours every time you burn it.
If the candle is 3", burn it for 3 hours, and so on. This allows a
nice wax pool to develop and therefore will give you the best "scent
throw". It will also prevent your candle from developing a crater or
sink hole in the middle.
- To prevent a smoking candle, KEEP
THE WICK TRIMMED! Always try to keep the wick trimmed to about 1/4",
even while the candle is burning. An ideal flame height is 1/2".
If it gets much taller than that the wick should be trimmed. So not
only should you trim the wick before you light the candle, but you should
be monitoring the wick/flame as the candle is burning and you might have
to put out the candle to trim it every so often. Do not just light
it and forget about it!
- KEEP THE WICK STRAIGHT AND
CENTERED! This will ensure a nice, even burn throughout the life of
your candle. If you candle has burned unevenly due to a wick that
hasn't been kept straight or because of a draft, carefully push the wick
to the higher side so the candle burns mostly to the higher side.
After a few times, the candle should repair itself.
- Do not leave a burning candle
unattended. For pillar type candles, be sure that you are following
the " hour per inch" rule so that you don't over burn you r candle and
therefore get a leak in the side of it from letting it go too long.
Pillar candles (free standing, not in jars) should be burned only until
the wax pool reaches about 1/4" from the edge of the candle. At that
point, put it out, let the was harden and then you can start all
over again.
- If you get "mushrooming" on your
wick, the wick was probably too long as it was burning. Next time
just extinguish the candle, trim, and relight.
- Rotate your candle every so often.
If there is any kind of a draft where the candle is being used, this
will help it burn evenly.
- To extinguish your candle use a
wick dipper. This is the smokeless way to put out a candle.
Just dip the burning wick into the wax pool, then pull it up and
reposition the wick in the center.
- Keep candles out of the reach of
children and pets.
- To prevent fading, keep out of
direct sunlight.
